Bladen

Bladen County Historical Society
Harmony Hall Plantation

Harmony Hall was the built c.1768 by Revolutionary War Colonel James A. Richardson, a native of Stonington, Connecticut, who ran a West Indies shipping line. After being shipwrecked off Cape Hatteras and delayed in the White Oak area along the Cape Fear River, he bought 12,000 acres, married a local widow originally from Barbadous, Elizabeth O'Neal Purdy, and built the home. The house sits on its original foundation and is interpreted along with several outbuildings and village structures more recently moved onto the property. Visitors to Harmony Hall are treated to a glimpse back into the lives of the Richardsons at Harmony Hall, their legendary involvement in the defeat of Cornwallis, and also can enjoy seasonal programs focused on 18th and 19th century agriculture traditions and home life.
