Brunswick Town State Historic Site
A major pre-Revolutionary port on North Carolina's Cape Fear River, Brunswick was razed by British troops in 1776 and never rebuilt. During the Civil War, Fort Anderson was constructed atop the old village site. Colonial foundations dot the present-day tour trail, which crosses the earthworks of the Confederate fort. This serene riverside setting, along with colonial and Civil War history and visitor center exhibits make for a memorable outing. The site was attacked and briefly captured by Spanish Privateers in September 1748, and it was the site of the Stamp Act Rebellion in February 1766. The site was also home to Royal Governors Arthur Dobbs (who also died here and is buried in St. Philip's Church) and William Tryon.
