Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site
Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. A nugget discovered on John Reed's farm in 1799 by his son Conrad Reed began the first gold rush. North Carolina led the nation in gold production until 1848, when the great rush to California eclipsed it. A museum documenting the history of gold production in North Carolina and a library with geology texts and Reed Family genealogy are open to the public. Visitors may participate in gold panning, guided stamp mill demonstrations and mine tours, when conditions permit.
