Carteret County Historical Society and Museum
The History Place

The History Place fosters and promotes public knowledge of and interest in the history and culture of the people of Carteret County. They accomplish this through the collection, preservation, interpretation, documentation, and exhibition of written and tangible materials. A spacious exhibit hall features displays on the culture and history of Carteret County. The museum maintains a library with over 8,000 volumes of American and North Carolina History, covering American and North Carolina history as well as other subjects. The library also collects and maintains a large collection of local history and genealogy material.

Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center
The Core Sound Watefowl Museum & Heritage Center brings together the historical, cultural, artistic, environmental, and educational elements of eastern North Carolina to preserve the rich waterfowl heritage associated with the Core Sound area. The museum showcases the history, culture, crafts, lifestyles, and the surrounding environment/wildlife of the Core Sound region through community and artistic displays, a freshwater pond and self-guided nature trail and public/private programs.

North Carolina Maritime Museum
The North Carolina Maritime Museum documents, collects, preserves, and researches the maritime history, and its corollary natural history, of coastal North Carolina for the purpose of interpreting this history through educational services and exhibits for our contemporary society, and passing intact its material culture to future generations. The museum complex includes the main exhibit hall, the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center for the construction and restoration of wooden boats, and the repository for the Queen Anne's Revenge. The museum also maintains the Charles R. McNeill Library and archives with books, journals, photographs and manuscripts on or relating to maritime history.

Beaufort Historical Association
Beaufort Historical Association researches, preserves, and interprets the cultural, architectural and historical heritage of Beaufort and Carteret County. Beaufort Historic Site includes historic structures dating to the 1770's, an apothecary's office, and the restored Carteret County Courthouse.

North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is one of three state Aquariums run by the North Carolina Aquariums Division, part of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Located in the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, the Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores was built in 1976. After a massive expansion project, the Aquarium tripled in size and reopened in 2006. Aquarium exhibits center on the theme of "North Carolina from the mountains to the sea." The Aquarium also offers outdoor educational activities.

Cape Lookout National Seashore
Cape Lookout National Seashore, which includes the Cape Lookout Historic District, conserves and preserves for the future the outstanding natural resources of a dynamic coastal barrier island system; protects and interprets the significant cultural resources of the past and contemporary maritime history; provides for public education and enrichment through proactive interpretation and scientific study; and provides for sustainable use of recreation resources and opportunities.

Fort Macon State Park
Fort Macon interprets and preserves the history of this structure. Displayed throughout the fort is the history of the site and its military role from the pre-Civil War era through World War II. Exhibits include the hot shot furnace in the fort yard, bread oven, kitchen and supply areas, and exhibits on the Fort Macon soldier's life.

Carteret County Public Library (Carteret Pamlico Craven Regional Library System)
The local history and genealogy collection at the Carteret County Public Library consists of books, vertical files, microfilm, and CD-ROM databases on or relating to Carteret County, the coastal region, and North Carolina. The library also collects and maintains a small collection of original genealogy research.

North Carolina Coastal Federation
The North Carolina Coastal Federation headquarters the Bob Daland Nature Library. With more than 600 titles specific to the coastal environment and its conservation it is a resource for student, teachers or the curious coastal resident. Also on display at the federation office is an extensive shell collection comprised of specimens from around the world.

Carteret Community College Library
Genealogy Collection

The Carteret Community College Library collects material to support the educational programs of the college. In order to enhance the learning experience for the students and the general public, the library also collects books, microfilm, and CD-ROM databases on local history and genealogy. Although focused primarily on Carteret County and North Carolina, the collection is not restricted to these subjects.

National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration
Rice Library

The mission of the Rice Library is to provide scientific, technical and legislative research materials on marine science to researchers from NOAA staff, the general public, academia, industry and other governmental agencies. The collections cover habitat restoration, mapping and remote sensing; marine chemistry, pollution and toxicology; oceanography; living marine resources and protected species; and marine fisheries and fisheries statistics.
