Cherokee County Historical Museum, Inc.
The Cherokee County Historical Museum houses a core collection of well over two thousand items collected over a seventy year period in the Cherokee County area by Arthur Palmer. This collection was formerly the Palmer Museum, which used to be located in Marble, NC. These holdings consist primarily of artifacts excavated from Indian mounds, discovered in the local region, and bartered from area citizens in years past. The museum presently houses and interprets these materials and later additions to the collection including many items of local historical interest. The Cherokee County Historical Museum for the most part reflects the life of the Cherokee Indian before and during the time of the removal along the Train of Tears to Oklahoma, including Fort Butler where the Indians were held near present-day Murphy, and the early life of the white man in Cherokee County. Other collections of interest include artifacts from the local marble mining enterprises, local notables and families, and unique individual stories.
