John C. Campbell Folk School Fain Archives and History Center
The John C. Campbell Folk School was founded in 1925 as a collaboration between two female educators, Olive Dame Campbell and Marguerite Butler, and the people of Brasstown. The school was founded as a means to enrich and enliven the existence of local/regional community members. Based on the Danish folk schools, the John C. Campbell Folk School operates on the fundamentals of non-competitive adult education. Classes include the folk and fine visual arts, folk and fine craft, folk music, folk dance, cooking, gardening, and writing. Collections in the Fain Archive and History Center include audio recordings of local/regional folk and vernacular music in a variety of analog and digital formats, video tapes, DVD's, photographs (including important photographs by Doris Ulmann), school records on paper, manuscripts, and memorabilia. The History Center is open regular hours to the public and the Fain Archives is open to approved researchers by appointment. Visitors to the Histor Center will discover the rich heritage that has made the Folk School an Historical landmark and much used destination for contemporary cultural tourism.
