Durham

Duke Homestead State Historic Site
Duke Homestead State Historic Site preserves and exhibits the early home, factories, and farm where Washington Duke first grew and processed tobacco. Duke's sons later founded The American Tobacco Company, the largest tobacco company in the world, and brought what would become Duke University to Durham. A tour includes the Duke family's restored home, early factory, curing barn, and packhouse. The Tobacco Museum exhibits trace tobacco history from American Indian times to the present. The museum also houses a research library containing historical and contemporary books and periodicals on tobacco farming and manufacturing.

Bennett Place State Historic Site
The mission of Bennett Place State Historic Site is to preserve and interpret the history of the largest surrender of the Civil War and the lives of the 19th century yeoman farmers such as the Bennetts. The negotiations between General Joseph E. Johnston and Major General William T. Sherman took place in the home of James and Nancy Bennett. This surrender culminated in the stacking of arms of 89,270 Confederate soldiers active in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The Bennett farm has been reconstructed to depict the life of the Bennett family and the scene of the surrender negotiations. There is a visitor center, which includes a museum gallery with exhibits telling the story of the Bennett family and the surrender, a theater, which shows the short film, "Dawn of Peace", and a museum gift shop. Special events and living history programs are held throughout the year.
