Halifax
Historic Halifax State Historic Site
In the spring of 1776, North Carolina's Fourth Provincial Congress met in Halifax and unanimously adopted a document called the "Halifax Resolves", the first official action by an entire colony recommending independence from England. Historic Halifax, one of North Carolina's State Historic Sites, interprets the first eighty-five years of the town of Halifax. The Historic Halifax Visitor Center has an audio visual presentation as well as restored furnished buildings on the grounds of the site, including the Owens House, home of a Halifax merchant c. 1760; Taverns - Eagle Tavern and the Tap Room Tavern c. 1760-1790; The Federal Style Sally Billy Plantation House, c. 1808; Burgess Law Office c. 1808; the 1832 County Clerk's Office; and the 1838 Jail, complete with jail cells. There is also the Montfort Archaeological Exhibit, a building constructed over the excavation of Joseph Montfort's house, containing walkways over the excavated foundation and exhibits which educate visitors about historic archaeology. The William R. Davie House, home of a former NC Governor, is the next house scheduled for restoration.
