Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site
Excavations began at Town Creek in 1937 and continued for fifty years. Today excavations continue on a limited basis. The property became a state historic site in 1955. During the 1950s and 1960s key features of the site were reconstructed, including the mound, two temple structures, the burial hut, and the surrounding stockade. Today the Town Creek site remains the only state historic site in North Carolina dedicated to Native American heritage. A visit to Town Creek Indian Mound offers a glimpse of pre-Columbian life in Piedmont North Carolina. The visitor center contains interpretive exhibits, as well as audiovisual programs that bring alive a rich cultural heritage from the buried past. Self-guided tours of the rebuilt structures and mound and other group activities are available.

Mount Gilead Museum Foundation
Mount Gilead Museum

The Mount Gilead Museum is an outgrowth of the Spirit of Mount Gilead organization and became self-supporting in 1999, the year of the town's centennial. The museum, located in an historic turn-of-the-century downtown home, interprets the history of the town of Mt. Gilead through permanent and special exhibits. The front parlor of the home, the dining room, and an upstairs bedroom are decorated with fine period furnishings from the community. The kitchen interprets local cuisine and cooking implements and traditions of the past. The rest of the museum displays items on topics such as the military, education, athletics, the economy, clubs and organizations, the religious community, Mt. Gilead's social, civic, and government leaders, local businesses and business and commercial leaders, and the general history of Mt. Gilead and its people.
