Joint Senate of the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies
Beginning in the 1820s each Society began to actively solicit portraits of their distinguished alumni and others who represented their ideals. The Phi began its collection with portraits of Johnston Blakely, Joseph Caldwell, and Benjamin Franklin. The Di answered with William R. Davie, William Hooper, and Archibald Murphey. Paintings by such noted artists as Charles Wilson Peale, Thomas Sully, Eastman Johnson, and William Garl Browne grace each collection. The competition created one of the largest privately-owned portrait collections in the state - visually commemorating the long succession of governors, senators, cabinet officials, scientists, and jurists who have issued from the halls of the Societies.
