Richmond Temperance and Literary Society
Temperance Hall and John Charles McNeill House

The Richmond Temperance and Literary Society, founded in 1853 in what was then "Lower Richmond"(before the establishment of Scotland County), built Temperance Hall near Wagram, NC, in what was then called the Fontcol community. This hexagonal structure is constructed from handmade local bricks and served the Society as a meeting place where the group promoted abstinence from the use of alcohol through the sharing of literature, debating, and other intellectual pursuits. The nearby John Charles McNeill House, the birthplace of well-known North Carolina poet John Charles McNeill (1874-1907), was moved a few miles to this Temperance Hall property around 1960. The house has been restored and is now a historic house museum celebrating the life and work of McNeill and serves also as a visitor center for Temperance Hall. Both structures are located in a beautiful setting in a grove of trees near the old Fontcol millpond and Spring Hill cemetery, and all properties and grounds are open for the enjoyment of the public by appointment.
