From a display sign: "City of Houston - On October 19, 1878, a 291' iron-hulled steamship, loaded with passengers and crew, left dock in New York City, course set for Galveston, Texas. She was valued at about $200,000, and was considered one of the finest boats in the line, insured for about 2/3 of her value by European Companies. Storm clouds gathered, and by the time the 'City of Houston' reached the Frying Pan Shoals off the coast of Wilmington, NC, a full-fledged hurricane was roaring through her masts." On the 23rd, the ship sank with all its cargo, not to be discovered until July 1987. The articles in this photo were found in the wreckage.
